History of the Foundation

The North Salem Open Land Foundation (NSOLF), a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) land trust, was founded in 1974 and serves the Town of North Salem, New York and the surrounding community. NSOLF is dedicated to protecting open space to provide refuge for wildlife and educational and recreational opportunities for the community at large. Since NSOLF's incorporation, the Foundation has protected over 900 acres of land. The Foundation preserves these lands through an acquisition and conservation easement program.

The mission of the Foundation is the preservation of the character and natural beauty of the town of North Salem, NY and the area around it by establishing land areas free from exploitation, development, and deterioration and by maintaining the environmental integrity of the area. Proactive acquisitions have occurred through land owner outreach in areas of North Salem that fall within the Croton Watershed - NYC watershed lands - or the Eastern Westchester Biotic Corridor. These sites fall within two of New York State Open Space Conservation Plan specific project areas.
