Marx Preserve
Trails Description
Marx Preserve offers a moderate hike through winding forest trails rich with natural beauty and local history. As you explore, you’ll encounter historic stone walls that hint at the land’s agricultural past. The preserve has two separate entrances: a designated parking lot on Waccabuc Road and a small pull-off area on Sullivan Road. Whether you begin your walk from the main lot or the quieter roadside access, you’ll enjoy a peaceful journey through mature woodlands steeped in character with dramatic outcroppings.
In 1976, the Marx family generously donated over 100 acres, creating our only preserve in Lewisboro. Visitors can explore its well-marked trails from two convenient parking areas—one on Route 138 near Sullivan Road, and another on Sullivan Road itself.
The preserve is home to two of the highest hilltops in town, offering sweeping views from scenic slopes along Route 138. Its diverse landscape shifts from rugged rock outcroppings to peaceful bogland, providing a rich habitat for local wildlife.
Located in a corridor once slated for intense development, Marx Preserve now stands as a protected haven of natural beauty for all to enjoy.
We are dedicated to preserving the character and natural beauty of the town of North Salem, NY and the area around it by establishing land areas free from exploitation, development, and deterioration and by maintaining the environmental and ecological integrity of the area.
