Baxter Preserve
Trail Description
Baxter Preserve features easy, winding trails through open meadows that bloom with wildflowers in the warmer months. Paths lead to the forest edge and circle a scenic pond along the trail known as the Racetrack, offering a peaceful mix of meadow and woodland views. Walk as little or as much as you would like by connecting the various footpaths.
Baxter Preserve is one of our most cherished and expansive natural areas. Originally donated in 1979 by “The Baxter Road Group,” the first 114-acre parcel—fondly known as The Racetrack—earned its name from the point-to-point horse races held there during the 1950s. Since then, it has become a beloved community hub in North Salem.
In 1985, the preserve grew with the addition of 15 adjoining acres, generously donated by “The Baxter 1981 Associates.” Today, at the heart of Baxter Preserve lies an 8-acre pond encircled by gentle trails that attract hikers, horseback riders, dog walkers, and the occasional fisherman. These trails offer a peaceful way to experience the area's rich biodiversity and a unique window into North Salem's rural heritage.
Just across Baxter Road, a second 37-acre parcel was added in 1980—also a gift from “The Baxter Road Group.” This section features a high meadow and a wooded area to the northwest, providing elevated views of the southern parcel and the Titicus Reservoir beyond. It’s also a vital habitat for returning bobolinks and other grassland birds.
Together, these parcels make up a vital green space for wildlife and the community alike—a perfect spot to connect with nature and the history of North Salem.

We are dedicated to preserving the character and natural beauty of the town of North Salem, NY and the area around it by establishing land areas free from exploitation, development, and deterioration and by maintaining the environmental and ecological integrity of the area.
